Help our Gas Distribution network run smoothly

As an engineer within our Gas Distribution network, you’ll be a vital member of our team as we ensure the smooth running of the network. Representing the communities we serve, you will be at the forefront of our operations.

Spanning three areas, you could be working within our Pressure Control & Storage (PC&S) environment – here you’ll face varied tasks and challenges as you make sure that any faults are found and rectified for our above ground assets. As a Lead Engineer within our Pipelines division, you will be tasked with making sure that our pipelines and assets above the ground are properly operated and maintained. Finally, within the Plant, Tools & Equipment (PT&E) team our engineers are responsible for maintaining all of the equipment the Gas Distribution network uses, rigorously testing it on a daily basis.

Whatever your area of expertise, you will have an important part to play in making sure that Health, Safety and Environmental procedures are followed correctly and that the National Grid network runs efficiently and reliably.

Key responsibilities

You’ll work with a talented and multi-faceted team to ensure the correct operation of above ground assets. You’ll use your own initiative when required to demonstrate flexibility as you work with minimal supervision. You will also:

  • Ensure that all maintenance records are accurate and up-to-date
  • Be responsible for safety critical system availability
  • Contribute to the effective implementation of Health, Safety and Environmental procedures

You’ll be supported as you develop a wide range of leadership, business and technical skills through structured training and on-the-job experience. Working closely with your line manager you will establish and navigate through a Personal Development Plan that is tailored to your needs.

What we’re looking for

With a minimum of GCSE’s, you will ideally be educated to a minimum of Level 2 C&G or NVQ, in either a mechanical, engineering or maintenance qualification. You’ll already have knowledge of pressure control systems, pipelines or plant protection techniques, as well as:

  • Previous experience in a gas environment or other utilities area
  • A full UK driving licence
  • Great team player
  • A keen eye for detail
  • Drive to develop and lead
  • Willingness to work on a standby rota
  • Sound ability to solve technical issues
  • Good understanding of health & safety

This is an exceptional opportunity to display and develop your skills with one of the most iconic brands within the energy network, as well as the chance to take advantage of long term opportunities in the future as we continue to grow and develop. If you can rise to the challenge and responsibility, then this is the role for you.

  • In return, we offer:
  • A starting salary of £29,825
  • Performance related bonuses
  • Shift and call out allowances, with an additional hour’s payment
  • Industry training with recognised qualifications
  • Defined contribution pension scheme
  • 25 days holiday
  • Comprehensive flexible benefits scheme
